Super Bowl Sunday! Go Hawks!

About 4 more hours until the game! We are excited and have all of our snacks and things ready to go.

Friday, Bill and Judy Bryant arrived in their 5th wheel rig. The girls went to the grocery store and Target for some supplies. Then Mar, Gar, and I went to the stadium area, Westgate Entertainment District, and saw the happenings there. Lots of people, bars, restaurants. We shared some nachos at Calico Jack’s then wandered around.

Saturday we went to downtown Phoenix and wandered around there for a little while until it started pouring down rain! We ran for a restaurant to get lunch and wait out the rain. That didn’t work!

Next we headed to the Seahawks 12 rally at the Diamondback’s Chase Field. It is very similar to the Mariner’s Safeco Field. There were thousands of crazy fans waiting to get in. Cheers and chants of Sea Hawks were heard constantly. Once we went through the security of metal detectors and bag check, we went down on the field. Lots of free give aways like 12 flags, towels, capes, green fuzzy hair hats, games, and live music.

Towards the end they showed a recap of the games this year. It was funny because when they showed the Kearse catch in overtime against the Packers, the whole place got kind of quiet, like everyone was holding their breath to see if he caught it. When he did, the place went nuts! Almost like being there again!

Steve Raible came out and announced that the person who had thought of doing the rally was there and Paul Allen came out and thanked everyone for coming. Then the members of the Ring of Honor were announced along with other former Hawks. It was pretty exciting. But the best part was people watching. There must have been 10,000 plus people there.

The 12s are going to take over the Super Bowl today and make it just like a home game.

Almost forgot, this morning as I was lying in bed I heard some sirens on the road a ways away from us. Then I kept hearing cars drive by the motor home. I hadn’t heard any in the mornings before this and thought, Hmmm, leaving for the game pretty early. I finally looked out the window and saw one, then another cop driving by. I got up and looked out the front window and saw 6 cop cars parked right in front of us.
image

We watched that for a while and saw them talking to some people from the motor home in front of us. Garry went out and asked someone later what was happening. He said he had been robbed at gunpoint that morning!

Well, that kind of freaked us all out a little. Later on, Bill Bryant talked to someone else who said they guys had hired hookers earlier. Well, with hookers come more than just STDs, I guess! What idiots!

Sea…Hawks! Sea…Hawks!

Seahawks Blue Friday: Fun day today. It rained almost all day so that kind of sucked. But we made the best of it.

We dinked around for a while in the morning, then the Bryant’s showed up. They got sort of settled then Marilee, Judy, and I took off to do a bit of shopping.

We headed to the Peoria Sports Complex area (where spring training for the Mariners takes place.) I am pretty familiar with that area from my years of Spring Training driving. We did some shopping for essentials like mixers, pillows (for me) and various other sundries.

Got back and unloaded stuff then Garry wanted to go to a furniture store by the stadium to check out a new recliner for the motor home. We found the perfect one for only $149 but he thinks it isn’t good enough and he wants black (even though the interior of the motor home is beige/browns and the chair was a nice chocolate brown leather. Oh, well, not my problem!

We then headed to the action next to the stadium. Still raining. There is an outdoor mall area that has a ton of restaurants and bars, and maybe a few shops… but there is a nice Fountain Park in the middle where they are having concerts every night.

We went into a bar for a drink and some nachos. We asked the waitress about the action (it’s all about the action, boss) that evening. She said there was a concert by the Fountain park, but even she didn’t recognize the singer/band.

We walked around the area and checked things out, but decided it wasn’t going to be worth the effort to come back, find parking, then stand in the rain for some music we had never heard of.

So, back to the RV park. Went to Bill and Judy’s for drinks and friends of theirs from Husky Bus came over to visit. We had a nice time visiting with everyone.

Then we headed to the bar and grill at the hotel next door for dinner. Most of us had the burgers which were pretty good. Garry lost a game of pool to a local shark. Then it was time to head back to the ranch, er, motor home.

Tomorrow is the Seahawk Fan Fest and/or Rally at the Diamondback Stadium. We plan on heading out fairly early and see how things go there.

Weather may or may not be getting better. I am not sure since I haven’t seen or heard the weather report today but originally it was going to be better, now, who knows!

Anyway, good times.

Quick Update

Long day of driving (yeah, right, it showed 4 1/2 hours from Burbank when I was looking for places with seats available to fly into!) Took me about 6 to get from Redlands to Peoria! I did see 2 vehicles flying Seahawks flags on the way and quite a few Washington RVs.

It was so exciting to see the stadium with the Super Bowl numbers on it and all the stuff around it. I have driven by it many times over the years and never thought anything about it until today!

Met up with Mar and Gar at the RV park. We had some drinks and pizza, watched some of the local news about the happenings around town. Plan to head out for some Super Bowl fun tomorrow.

Saturday is a big Seahawks fan rally we plan on going to.

Other friends, Judy and Bill, are coming in tomorrow.

More fun!

California Dreamin’

The skies were fairly clear at first so I had a good view of Mt Rainier. I really was amazed at how little snow we have in the mountains, however. We might be in for a dry summer – waterwise. The flight was a bit bumpy at times, landing was like going into Seattle – foggy/cloudy and bumpy.

Arrived into Bob Hope Burbank Airport sometime after 5:30 and went to get my rental car. I had ordered a Mustang convertible since I am thinking about getting another one in the next year and wanted to try it out. Well, it wasn’t a Mustang, it was a Camaro! Hmmm, Chevy? Oh, well, I figured they didn’t have any Mustangs, because, of course, they are waaaay better!

I had originally planned to stay in Burbank but decided to take off since I was wide awake. Traffic was typical CA. Took me 2 hours to go maybe 60 miles.

Was getting hungry so ended up in Redlands at a Comfort Suites. Got a grilled chicken burrito next door at the Pollo Loco. It was decent – huge so didn’t finish it.

Why is it that hotel rooms have their smoke alarms right over the bed with a bright blue light shining down into your face? The other thing was that their WiFi sucked and I couldn’t get the iPad to work with it. Hence, no post last night.

This morning, I went to Target to get some things I didn’t want to have to bring in my ‘liquids’ baggie and then got out of town by about 10:00.

First, however, I had to figure out the car. Didn’t do that before taking off in it last night. It has a navigation system, XM radio, and bluetooth. So, I was able to hook my phone up via bluetooth and listened and practiced my Italian language course.

After I got tired of that (I like to be able to do it on the computer so I can see how the words are spelled. I learn it better that way), I listened to a book until I stopped here in Blythe for lunch.

I thought it was pretty funny as I was coming into Palm Springs, all I could see were big wind mills all around! The other thing is that the weather is supposed to be kind of crappy the next couple of days. Oh, well, it is still 70+ degrees.

image

I am thinking it will be another 2 hours into Peoria where the Wamsley’s and Bryant’s are staying at an RV park. My old Mariner Spring Training stomping grounds!

Will post when I get WiFi or hook up to my hotspot.

A Year Ago… GO HAWKS!

It was this Tuesday one year ago that we found out that Darrel had pancreatic cancer. It has been a rollercoaster year of ups and downs. I remember so well the gut-wrenching feeling when Dr. Feldman came in the room and told us.

Then the horrible time calling friends and family to tell them. Many of the friends were out of town for their winter vacations as they are again this week.

This year, I might be going down to Phoenix to see a couple of them and also absorb some of the Seahawks excitement. Depends on whether I can catch a flight somewhere in California or Las Vegas on standby. Then will drive to meet them.

The flights aren’t looking too good since many other people have the same thing in mind, but, we shall see. Going to try tomorrow since the flights seem to be a bit better than Thursday.

Happy New Year/Adventures in Cooking!

Happy New Year to everyone! Hope it is a good one.

I have been meaning to post for weeks now, but, what can I say but that I have been busy. Busy doing lots of cooking, it seems like.

It started the 2nd week of December when the Wamsley’s and I catered a dinner for a motor freight company owned by a friend. We did it last year too, so this was a bit easier and we knew quantities to cook.

The menu was:
Prime Rib (Garry’s specialty)
Epic Mashed Potatoes (garlic, shallots, cream cheese, sour cream, butter, bacon – all the things that make potatoes great!)
Not Your Mama’s Green Bean Casserole (green beans with mushrooms, shallots, a cream cheese/sherry sauce, and Crispy French Fried Onions on top!)
Penne Pasta Alfredo – creamy, cheesey goodness.
Caesar Salad – yes, boring but need salad, right?
S’mores and Pumpkin Cake for desserts.

It was a busy few days, but the dinner turned out better than last year and we made a couple of bucks.

As I had said in my last post, I had mixed things up for the holidays this year. One of those was going to the Wamsley’s for Christmas Eve. Guess what we had for dinner? See above, a few variations but basically the same.

Then, what did I make for Christmas dinner with my folks and Vanessa and Gary? Prime rib, green bean casserole, and to mix it up Hasselback Potato Casserole!

The Saturday after Christmas, I had most of my family over for game night. Vanessa handled the game part and I fixed lasagne. The rest of them provided bread, salads, and desserts. We had a great time playing Pictionary and another game (can’t remember the name of it) which made us all feel like we didn’t know one another very well.

Next up on the cooking scene – New Year’s Eve. Mar and Gar Wamsley were having a party at their place with, you guessed it, prime rib and the rest of the menu we cooked for the catered dinner. Yes, I did help with the cooking and set up.

It was a fun time, dinner turned out very well, and they let me spend the night so I wouldn’t have to drive the 2 miles home, thankfully, since there was a little alcohol involved. We (at least, most of us!) got up the next morning and cleaned up and put away everything. Then Mar, Gar, and I had a French Dip sandwich and leftover pasta for lunch!

The Des Moines Yacht Club, that I belong to, has a scholarship fund that is part of Dollars for Scholars. We had a silent auction at our December meeting. I put in to do a Northwest Seafood Dinner.

It was purchased by friends, Diane and Steve Sewell, for a good sum from what I heard! So, last Sunday I went over to their house to cook dinner for 6. We had a shrimp and crab appetizer. Then poached salmon with lemon and dill aioli on a bed of spinach dressed with lemon and olive oil. Roasted baby potatoes and asparagus rounded out the main course.

Dessert was meringue with home grown kiwi and blueberries with strawberry sauce (I had bought nice raspberries to go with it but forgot them at home!)

Diane has a severe dairy allergy so I made everything from scratch, keeping that in mind. I think they all enjoyed it. I know I did!

Lastly, I cooked dinner for the general meeting dinner last night at the club. Beef stroganoff, peas, and a mixed green salad for 60 people. The stroganoff turned out every well, there was plenty, and I think everyone enjoyed it!

No more big cooking events coming up for a while. Thankfully!

What else have I been doing? I have been preparing for my Europe trip. I am getting excited! I had lunch with Don and Frankie today, who own the apartment in Nice and will be there to greet me when I arrive.

We had a nice lunch at a French Restaurant (of course), talked about the trip, then Don and I went to a travel store in Wallingford and I bought a few things for the trip.

I plan on blogging about the trip, food, and other adventures, so stay tuned!

Here is Don & Frankie’s apartment in Nice.

After Nice, on to Florence, Italy. Then I will probably go to Venice.
Here is my Florence apartment:

The owner has been very accommodating and friendly, so I am excited to stay there for a couple of weeks.

After that, who knows! No timeline. No plans. Just going to decide as I go and see what happens!

But I will be blogging my travels and food adventures all along, so stay tuned!

Merry Christmas

Well, it has been a hard couple of months but the holiday season has been especially difficult. I have kept busy. Don’t ask me what, but, really, I am quite busy every day…for the most part.

Did a little decorating for Christmas. A tree. The fireplace mantle. Never got any lights up outside. (Thanks, a lot, Courtney!)

Didn’t want to do anything the same as in past years. It is still hard every single day…so have tried to mix things up.

We have done Christmas Eve here at our house since my ‘Aunt’ Olga died. So, about 18 years or so. Didn’t feel up to that this year.

Then, on Christmas morning, we would usually go to Darrel’s sister, Diane’s, (and before that his mom and dad’s house) for brunch. That had been going on since I first became part of the family about 34 years ago!

But, I just couldn’t do the same thing this year.

Instead, I went to my friend’s Mar and Gar’s house for Christmas Eve last night. It was nice being able to stand aside and not have to worry about any kind of family dramas.

Not that I saw any there, but it was good to be kind of detached from everyone because I wasn’t part of their family. I was just able to enjoy them as I talked to the ones I knew or met the ones I didn’t.

This morning I got up and decided I should make Courtney breakfast for Christmas since he had to leave for work about 11:00 AM. (Courtney worked both Christmas Eve 2:30-11:00pm and Christmas Day 12:00 – 11:00PM)

Then as something different from past Christmas Day events, I had my parents and Vanessa & Gary over for dinner. Made prime rib, Hasselback potato casserole (nummy), green beans with bacon and onion, and sweet Hawaiian rolls. Then mom brought Sticky Toffee pudding for dessert.

We didn’t exchange presents this year, but some of us donated to the Darrel Miller Scholarship Fund which is part of the Navigating the Future charity at the Des Moines Yacht Club.

This is something the DMYC First Mates have done for 9 or so years. They raise money to provide scholarships to deserving seniors at Mount Rainier High School. It is which part of the national Dollars for Scholars organization.

So, it was a nice couple of days. Different, but it worked for me. I still get verklempt and cry most every day. Will be glad to get the season over with!

Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings, Happy Hanukkah, GO SEAHAWKS, and yada yada yada.

What I mean by all those cliches is:

May all your days be better than you could possible imagine.

Be more tolerant of others, especially those different than you. (I know, it is something we all need to remember every day.)

Try to look on the positive side of things since LIFE IS TOO SHORT. (If I know anything, it is this. But I also know, it is hard.)

AND Life is too short to waste it on empty Facebook homilies. Live Life!

Keep your friends and family close (even if they can drive you crazy, because they are also the ones who will keep you sane when things go downhill.)

So, my Christmas Wish this year is that everyone is as lucky as I am to have such great, supportive friends and family, and that you don’t need them for that any time soon!

Wishing you all a wonderful New Year!

Your sometimes depressed, sometime not, but still trying to be optimistic friend, Robin!

Belated Update – December 8, 2014

Went to Oregon with Marilee last Monday and Tuesday. Picked up the painting from Stephen Rogers. Went to his apartment and met him and his girlfriend. They were both very nice and his painting was great! Amazing work and such a nice guy.

Then Mar and I went into Portland and checked into our room at the Hotel DeLuxe. It is an older hotel and further from downtown that I thought, but we had a nice large double queen room.

We walked (after a wrong way detour!) to the Pearl District and went through some shops. Froze our hands, feet, and butts off! It was cold! Went back to the hotel and warmed up some.

Decided to go to Gruner for dinner. It was a short walk from the hotel. Had some good food. We ordered a sausage and sauerkraut platter and the house Coq au Vine to share bites. But started with an excellent starter of ricotta dumplings with apple, winter squash puree and speck!

The next morning (after Mar let me sleep in) we walked to the downtown area. Very similar to Seattle as far as the stores and Pioneer ‘mall’ that seemed like Pacific Place and Westlake combined.

Then we went to the food truck block. Seattle really needs to get over their resistance to food trucks. There must have been 50 in a large block/parking lot. We decided to just get a small taco to hold us since it was only around 11:00.

IMG_0416.JPG

After checking out of the hotel we tried to find a street of great shops that I remembered from when Darrel and I stayed there a dozen years ago. No luck but we did find the only Fred Meyer anywhere that doesn’t have a shoe or clothing department!

On Friday I had a bit of stomach issues and laid low. Still didn’t feel well on Saturday but managed to get a few Christmas decorations up. Had to stop after coming across Darrel’s stockings. Went over to Mar and Garry’s on Saturday evening to watch Gar light up his holiday flag. Then we watched the yacht club lighted boat parade for a while.

IMG_0415.JPG

Sunday was the many annual Special People’s cruise at the yacht club. It is really a great event where ‘special’ people go out on boats to see Santa on a boat anchored a few miles away. I have usually helped either on a boat or on the dock getting the ‘kids’ on and off and helping them tell Santa what they want. But this year I went out on the Santa boat, Another Bill. What fun it was to listen to the kids telling the Santa what they wanted for Christmas.

IMG_0414.JPG

We had the Seahawks on and watched them win, too!

Today, after cleaning the bathroom, floors, and kitchen, Courtney and I got the tree up. We set it up in the back room instead of living room for something different. I am trying to mix things up a bit this year so it isn’t too depressing. Doesn’t always work though.

I put the lights on, took them off again because the end wasn’t a male plug for the extension cord! Not sure why that happens but there was one plug that had both the male and female on it, so after taking them all off and putting them on again, it worked.. Why don’t all the strings have both?!

But I haven’t gotten too far on the actual decorating of the tree yet. Tomorrrow, I guess.

It still catches up with me sometimes when I remember that Darrel isn’t here. I guess it will be that way for a long time.

I have made arrangements to go to Europe the end of February. I will start out in Nice with a couple of friends who own an apartment there. Don and Frankie will get me oriented before they leave. Then I will stay at their place for a week before heading to Florence.

I found a great place in Florence owned by a woman in Australia and am going to stay there for 2 weeks. I hope to find some cooking schools in both places for day trips. I looked originally for a farm house/cooking school, but they don’t typically start until May or June. I wanted to be able to meet up with Don and Frankie, though, since it will be my first European trip and I am traveling alone. That is why I am going in that time frame, plus less tourists!

I am not sure what I will do after Florence. May come home or may move on somewhere else. I am leaving my options open!

Postscript to the Thanksgiving Story – another long saga, so beware!

The Seahawks won! Yay! Had a good time with Mar and Gar watching the game and then we combined leftovers for another Thanksgiving dinner.

When I got home I did some more clean up, even though I had lots of help after eating there were still some dishes to be done. I started the dishwasher, washed a few of the bigger things, and watched a bit of TV.

When I went to the bathroom a while later I smelled gas. Yep, coming from the hot water heater room. The dishwasher was done so I turned the gas off to the water heater.

I went to bed a little after 11:00. I heard Courtney come home around 11:30 and heard him open the door to the hot water heater room. I got up a couple of times in the night to pee and smelled gas each time. Courtney had left that door open so it wouldn’t build up and I had left a couple of windows open so we wouldn’t be asphyxiated, but again worried about it most of what was left of the night.

As I was trying to sleep, I was thinking the problem was the new gas line under the house that Courtney had installed. I thought it had to be leaking since the gas to the hot water heater was turned off. When I finally got out of bed I turned off the gas fireplace and didn’t use the gas stove, even though the rest of the house didn’t smell like gas.

Courtney got up and the first thing he thought was that it was the line under the house. We took the stuff out of the hot water heater room again and he opened the crawlspace hatch. Nope, no rush of gas from there so it had to be the hot water heater.

Now, Darrel was very handy in a lot of things but he took after his dad in that he didn’t always read directions or do things exactly right. Earlier this year the hot water heater had died. Darrel ordered a new part from Lowe’s and installed it. I don’t remember him telling me anything about the install except that we now had hot water.

(Side note: Interestingly enough, we got 2 parts from 2 different Lowe’s warehouses but were only charged for one. I kept meaning to take the other one back but never did.)

I guess one of the gas tubes leading into the heater had black electrician tape around it and Courtney kind of remembered Darrel saying something about that part not fitting correctly. So, Darrel just taped it up and that was that. Courtney thinks that when he was trying to get the heater to restart, after turning the gas off for the stove installation, he must have jiggled it enough to make it leak much more.

Sooo, Courtney decided to install the extra new part before he went to work. Now I had asked him to wait until Saturday when he was off, but he was determined to do it and he is stubborn just like his dad.

He got the extra new part and went through a frustrating couple of hours. I did convince him to read the directions, but he is also a visual learner. He finally figured out that there was a part/piece broken off in the tube that was leaking. He then came out and told me just to buy a new one.

(Off the subject side note: I ran over to Ace Hardware to get a couple of those outside faucet covers since it was supposed to be getting into the 20’s. Thank you Marilee for asking me about this. Darrel had never, ever done anything with the outside faucets and the one on the other side of the kitchen sink had been known to freeze up but never broke! While I was there I got some new LED reel Christmas lights for outside. And then found out they had 6′ – 8′ Fresh Noble Christmas Trees for $30! I ran home and got the truck and went back and got one. So excited!)

I ended up cleaning out the storage in the hot water heater room. It was a total mess and something that had needed cleaning for quite some time. Four Goodwill bags and one garbage bag later, it was looking okay.

Courtney texted me and asked if I had bought a new heater. No, I hadn’t but went online and decided I might as well just get one and have it installed. Lowe’s has a service that could do it on Saturday.

I called to see how much it would cost for the installation. SeaTac has a regulation that you need an expansion tank on the hot water heater to keep from blowing out the city water lines. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Me neither. Also, there was a $70 fee to the city. I was also told that the quoted price would not include anything that they ran into that needed to be corrected.

Now, this house is 60+ years old and Darrel has installed the last few hot water heaters. So, I was quite sure they would find many code violations or whatever that would add onto the installation price.

What was that price? $500! The hot water heater was just under $400! Plus the cost of the new expansion tank.

I texted Courtney and told him. He said that Vanessa’s (my BFF from grade school on up) boyfriend, Gary, had told Courtney on Thanksgiving that he would help with any of it if needed. Gary is quite the handy man and has done these kinds of things for years.

I called and he was available on Saturday morning. So, I went to bed with dirty hair and body but anticipating a new hot water heater in the morning!

Gary came over and said, ‘Well, let me take a look. It might be an easy fix.” I was like, ‘No way!’ Courtney and he started in on it.

Sure enough, he was able to get the part to drop right out! He got everything hooked up and it started on the first try. Then it died as soon as he let off the starter button. Try, try again, and again, and again. He looked around and said the exhaust wasn’t done properly. So, he fixed the exhaust and the heater started up! Hmmm, imagine that!

About an hour and a half after he arrived he was gone! Once again I am thankful for friends who are so willing to help me out. Thank you, Gary! Plus, Courtney has also been great in doing so much!

You would think I have had my share of problems this year, right? Wrong!

Tonight, I was in my recliner and it broke! I had noticed the last couple of weeks that it seemed to get stuck a bit when going up or down. Now it is stuck in a halfway position! It is probably 20 years old, so I guess it is time to buy a new one. I guess since I didn’t have to buy a hot water heater I will have to spend the money on a new recliner!

Tomorrow I am off to Oregon. Courtney and I were supposed to go this weekend but what with hot water heaters, stoves, and his getting tickets to the Sounders game tonight we couldn’t go. However, Marilee came through for me again and we are taking off in the morning.

Why? Because I commissioned a painting. When Darrel and I went on our Oregon coast trip in April, one of the hotels we stayed in had some great paintings. I had contacted the artist back then but he wasn’t available at the time. He contacted me a week or so after Darrel died and painted one that includes kind of a ‘memorial’ to Darrel.

I am quite excited to get it and also to spend some time shopping and dining in Portland with Marilee!

I will be posting about that trip soon!!

I also haven’t been doing much cooking so haven’t posted any recipes, etc. I am usually alone for dinner with Courtney’s schedule but am going to try to start cooking and posting again. Will also do some restaurant critiques on the trip!

Have a great week everyone, and go Sounders!
