We got up and went fishing this morning, along with all 3 of the guys in our group, but they were all on their own dinghies. No one caught a single thing!

We headed back to the dock since there were more boats coming in and some of us were leaving. The Josowitz’s and Kelly’s were heading down towards Prideaux Haven, but the Wamsley’s and Lande’s were staying one more night at Homfray. It was a little sad for me since I don’t know when or if we will see any of them this trip.

Darrel & I headed for Campbell River, but stopped briefly at Refuge Cove for gas. We had to cross the Straits of Georgia again! The Weather Girl, Yvonne, had told us yesterday it was supposed to be calm through the end of the week. But as we were leaving she said the winds were supposed to pick up this afternoon. Well, we were not too far from Homfray when it got a little bumpy. Then, going across the Straits was quite bumpy but no where near as bad as coming across last week. Darrel kept the speed and the bow down so I didn’t have too bad of a time with my back.

We checked into Discovery Harbour Marina and were given a slip on the D dock. The slips are narrow and there isn’t much room between docks, but we made it in without hitting the boat next to us. We got off and looked and realized there wasn’t any power! We couldn’t believe it! The whole dock had not power. So, we went to the office and asked for a slip with power. I was quite surprised they hadn’t asked up when we called in. But when we got to the office, they crew didn’t even seem to realize that the D dock didn’t have power and weren’t sure about a couple others! They had 20 amp on C dock and managed to find a 30 to 20 converter cord for us.

Back to the boat and pulled out of the slip, but the steering has been acting up and we had a hell of a time getting into the next slip! We made it and I was a bit of a nervous wreck so decided it was time for a drink. Darrel said it wasn’t nerve wracking but had a beer too.

We paid, then went to the Target store that is about a block away and got a few things, but they didn’t have any hydraulic fluid for the steering. Tomorrow’s adventure is to find that and a good grocery store. The Target has groceries but not as good of a selection as I would like.

We decided we better do something with the oysters and clams since the water in the marina might be a little suspect. Not everyone uses a holding tank and we are at the end of the marina where there isn’t much of a ‘flushing’ system with the tides.

Darrel shucked the oysters and I have been steaming the clams. We will have the last batch with the nectar along with a couple of stale pieces of good bread that I bought at Ganges. I checked and there wasn’t any mold! Bonus!

Darrel leaves at 3:30 to fly home for chemo. He won’t be back until Friday, so I get to amuse myself here in Campbell River. One thing I want to do is get a pedicure. I didn’t see any place in the little mall above the marina, but I am sure one can’t be too far. My birthday present to myself!

Hope all is well with you all! More posts soon now that I have internet connections again.

We left Ramsay Arm around 10:00 in the morning. Darrel and I went and pulled shrimp pots – again only 2! We then fished for more bottom fish. He caught a nice ling cod and I caught a big yellow eye.

We took off to catch up with the others, passed them, since our boat is smaller and faster, then stopped and dropped the lines in to troll for salmon.

The country up here is so amazingly beautiful. The islands are just big rocks with trees growing out of them. There are very few ‘shorelines’ like you might be familiar with in Washington or elsewhere. The Island/mountains go straight down into the water, sometimes for hundreds of feet instead of a gentle slope.

While we were trolling we went past a logging area. There was a ramp with a small dock that had a small boat tied up to it. Then there was an area that had 6 or so large split logs – and I mean like a whole tree split in two – forming a ramp . We saw a truck full of logs pull up next to it, drop it’s side rails, and a big cherry picker type vehicle gave the logs a shove and SPLASH into the water they went. There are obviously roads but you can’t see them from the water. Then, away the truck went for another load.

We went into Homfray Lodge’s dock for the night. It is a great place! Three brothers bought it about 4 years ago. There is a huge main lodge and ‘store,’ but the store is pretty bare bones at this point. They have several cabins, a communal kitchen, a party/eating area right above the water, and a fairly large dock.

The girls decided to have a pre-birthday ‘surprise’ party for me on the dock. Everyone cooked appetizers (I did find out so was able to contribute a little) and invited the 2 brothers, Scott and Dave, that were in residence along with a nice couple from Victoria, Suzanne and Richard. It was really nice and amazingly I got four birthday cards! These girls are prepared for anything, it seems. Everyone had a great time.

I forgot to post a couple pictures…here is the knee boarding:

First thing in the morning, Bill & Darrel went to get clams and oysters. Darrel said there were tons of both. The clams were small and barely under the sand and the oysters were easily picked up and put in the bucket.

Garry and Marilee are famous for their Sunday brunches and today was the day! They cook pork chops, Garry’s special sausage, bacon, hash browns, eggs, biscuits and gravy! A lot of times, they also do chicken fried steak, but not this one.

I went over about 9:00 to help and cooked the bacon. they already had most everything prepped and ready so by 10:30 everyone was eating. Did I mention that it is also a champagne brunch? Garry opened the first bottle shortly after I got there so after a big breakfast, several glasses of champagne, most of us were ready for a nap.

After Garry took his nap, he decided it was time to go knee boarding. Garry is a very young and vigorous 76 years of age and went around the bay doing very well. Then, our commodore, Brian, decided he needed to take a turn. He also did well. Darrel thought about it but was worried about the cold and how it would affect him.

Another fun day was had by all!

July 19, 2014

Hmmm, just realized that this post was saved as a draft and never published, so here it is a little out of sequence!

We left Big Bay a little after 10:00 and headed towards Ramsay Arm. Darrel & I went further past the entrance and tried our luck on first halibut, then salmon. As I have said before, if it wasn’t for bad luck, we wouldn’t have any luck at all. No fish. We moved on up Ramsay Arm and dropped our shrimp pots, then headed for the raft where the other 5 boats were tied up.

We came alongside the Keenan’s boat, Double Eagle, and tied up to them. It had started to rain, so after checking in with everyone, we all settled down to read books or do inside projects.

Happy hour starts around 5 every day so we went to the Keenan’s boat along with Simon and Yvonne. Everyone was doing their own thing for dinner, so it ended up being Frank, Trish, Darrel, and I on Keenan’s boat for a dinner of fresh salmon, baby new potatoes, bean salad, and asparagus. It was excellent!

After doing dishes (thanks to the Wamsley Water Company) we headed down to the other end of the raft for a second happy hour aboard Another Bill. The whole crew ended up there and there was a lot of laughter going on for a couple of hours.

The plan for Saturday morning was to get up and go dig clams and pick oysters. However, it poured all night long so only the Wamsley’s and Kelly’s ended up going at 7:00 AM low tide.

Frank had been having back problems and had a terrible night, so they decided to just head home so he could get it seen and, hopefully, fixed. They left around 11:00 AM so Darrel, Brian, and I headed out to check shrimp pots and do a little fishing. We got all of 4 shrimp in the 3 pots, so moved them across the way. Then we drifted around and the guys fished for bottom fish. They ended up with 1 large ling cod, 2 good sized green lings, 1 large and 1 small yellow eye, and a smal rock cod. Not bad for a couple hours work.

We checked the shrimp pots again and came up with a big fat zero! Dropped them again in a new area and headed back to the raft. Darrel spent a good hour or so cleaning the fish and we ended up with a nice batch of filets.

The highlight of the day, however, was the golf tournament. I guess they have had one the past few years in a different place but since we weren’t going there it was changed to the Ramsay Arm Open. Everyone (except the Josowitz’s) headed over to an area where there was some logging done last year that had a gravel road and nice place to tee off of.

Of course, a rain squall went through just as we got there. I declined entry due to my back so Jan and I sat in their dinghy and were the judges. Everyone took a number and teed off into the water after 2 practice shots. There were 4 logs nicely lined up end to end that Jan & I used as markers. It was close one, but Darrel hit the longest beating out Garry and then Marilee. It was pretty hilarious with all the comments back and forth, plus Jan kept a running commentary on the radio back to the Sandpiper.

Fun Day!

Friday Morning at Big Bay, Stuart Island July 18, 201

Yesterday was another sunny, hot day. Darrel and Bill got up at 5:00 AM and went fishing. Bill caught a salmon. I slept in.

Darrel cleaned the salmon for Bill and the cold bothered his hands. We thought he was kind of getting over that but I guess not.

Our friends, Simon and Yvonne came in around 9:00 AM. Then, later in the day, other club friends, Brian & Karen Kelly showed up. We had a nice potluck dinner with everyone including the managers, June & Garry. Fun time for all.

Darrel & Bill went fishing again this morning. I slept in. Nice and quiet on the boat when Darrel is gone! Darrel caught a small silver and they had a few other hits.

We are leaving in a few minutes and heading to Ramsay Arm where there are clams, oysters, and shrimp. Probably won’t have internet until sometime next week.

It was sprinkling a little earlier and is overcast but pleasant. Pictures are of our boats, the store/post office/liquor store/community center and across the bay.

What a Day! July 16, 2014

We left Nanaimo around 7:00 after getting fuel. The forecast wasn’t good, anywhere from 10 – 25 knot winds. Well, I think the winds were on the high side and the swells were upwards of 6 – 8 feet. It was not fun!

We stopped at Powell River to get fuel and took off again after cleaning up everything that was in the middle of the floor or the back deck. I was holding on for dear life all the way and my hands, arms, neck, and shoulders were very tight!

We kept going, though, and ended up at Stuart Island where friends were waiting. So nice to see them all!

Darrel and the guys went for a short fishing trip, then we had happy hour together with some yummy clams by Marilee.

We all did dinner separate for the most part, then the managers of the marina came down with a banana cream pie for dessert. We all chatted for a while, then some of them ate up the pie. Not a banana fan myself, but everyone thought it was great!

The guys are going fishing in the morning, so I am hoping for a sleep in for myself!

Yvonne and Simon are supposed to be in tomorrow so we will have a potluck welcome for them.

So glad to finally be here with no boat problems (knock on wood!) and friend to be with!

Thank you all for your welcome and prayers!!

Nanaimo

On the water again, finally! We left Ganges around 9:30 this morning and headed to Nanaimo, about 35 nautical miles away.

Seas were good, another sunny beautiful morning. Went through Dodd Inlet at a bit of a low tide (didn’t mean to be there so early) but went through okay except a bit of kelp in the propeller. Had to stop and clean it off.

We checked in at Nanaimo Port Authority and got a berth. Then we needed to find the marine supply store. The guys in the office told us it was just down the way a bit. We walked a mile or two and realized that it wasn’t exactly next door.

So, we stopped in at the Foundry Pub, had a beer and some chicken wings, and found out the place had moved and was about 5 miles away. We called a taxi!

Got the new seal for the water pump which has been leaking even though he replaced it in Ganges with a spare – both leaked! We also got a new starter. We have had so many problems and have overused the starter so it is going to go out eventually. We figured we would get one while we had a chance.

Darrel then spent a fun, hot 4 hours or so replacing the seal and various other things. I did a load of laundry. We both sweated a lot! It was upper 80’s.

I made crab and quinoa stuffed ancho chiles with cabbage salad for dinner. It was good but hot to use the oven! I needed to use the chiles before they went bad, though.

I just got back from walking to the store while Darrel cleaned the back of the boat of all the grease. I am now sitting with my feet in cold water with Epsom salts listening to a couple of guys playing a sax and singing some fun music. They have a small but enthusiastic audience. Tried to get a picture but it just didn’t show any detail, so no pictures today!

We are going to get up early and cross the Strait of Georgia. Then, depending on weather, we will head up to Big Bay on Stuart Island to meet up with friends.

And so it goes!

Update from Ganges

Yesterday was another beautiful and hot day here on Salt Spring Island. We walked around the town for an hour in the morning then hung out on the boat for a couple hours.

We heard some cheering from the Oystercatcher Bar and realized the World Cup was on. So, we walked up to the Local Bar and watched the rest of the game. I didn’t have a vested interest in who one, but was kind of hoping for Argentina. At least it didn’t come down to penalty kicks to win. I think that is a poor way of finishing a big game like that.

Today started with a little cloud cover, but it didn’t last long. It is heating up nicely now with the sun out. I fixed us a big breakfast today which I only do about once a week.

Last night I fixed pork chops on the grill and beets with beet greens. Delish!

Darrel talked to the mechanic today and there is a Volvo Penta dealer just around the corner by the Salt Spring marina. He walked over there to find out if they have a parts kit or how much a new one would cost.

The mechanic has warned us several times that it is Canada, eh? Going to cost an arm and a leg. Darrel just told him he had more money than time. The mechanic even offered us his car to tour the island. Not sure if we will take him up on it. Really a nice guy!

Darrel ordered a new fuel pump and it will be flown in this afternoon from Vancouver. Yes, it did cost an arm and a leg, but as much as we like Ganges, we would like to get back on the water!

We should be off again tomorrow morning. Yay!

Beautiful Salt Spring Island

A beautiful day again today. The mechanic came back and told Darrel if he would take the fuel pump out, he would then take it to the other mechanic. Darrel spent a few hours taking that out and replacing the water pump.

I went to the Saturday Market. It is really something. We have been several times before, but it always fun. Really a lot of booths with all kinds of things. Fresh vegetables, of course, but many kinds of hand made products, food, jewelry, etc. I picked up some vegetables, cheese and bread.

The mechanic came back a while ago and said he couldn’t get in touch with the other guy so we would have to wait until Monday. We didn’t expect anything sooner, so that is fine.

If we have to, we will have a new one sent up to us on Monday or Tuesday.

So, we are just going to enjoy a couple of days of warm weather and relaxation.

Ganges, Salt Spring Island

We had a good run up to BC. Missed the way into Bedwell for Customs, but only a few minutes out of the way.

We smelled gas all the way after fueling up in Des Moines. Got to Ganges and Darrel checked things and decided to call the local mechanic. He happened to be a diesel mech so said he would contact the gas mech and see us tomorrow.

Won’t go into it, but the fuel pump is new, and had been worked on this week. Screen cleaned out but there is obviously a problem.

I said that at least we were in a great spot to stay for a couple of days. Tomorrow is the Ganges Farmers Market! It is a beautiful place so I am happy!

More to come tomorrow.
